Description

This folk song of Scottish origin is based on lyrics that partly date to the 1600s. The original lyrics represent a bittersweet piece about love drifting apart, although there are many variant lyrics and the piece has enjoyed widespread popularity. This arrangement is on the harder side of early intermediate (the speed of the piece drops the level down from intermediate), but makes for an effective parlor piece and recital number. It’s an ideal way to introduce the classic wide arpeggio left-hand accompaniment pattern as well as working on pedaling.

Key: G major

Mood: calm, bittersweet, inspirational

Pedagogy: pedaling, rolled chords, arpeggio patterns, repeats.
