Description
Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle is a Christmas carol which originated from the Provence region of France.
The carol tune was first published in France in 1533, and translated into English during the 1700s. The song was originally not meant to be sung at Christmas; it was considered dance music for French nobility.
In the carol, visitors to the stable have to keep their voices down so the newborn can enjoy his dreams.
James L. King III’s trio arrangement for late elementary students of equal ability keeps all parts within middle C position for ease in reading. (If it weren’t for a stray accidental in the terzo and for the thick 4-5 voice chords in some parts, it would be elementary level.)
Students who are beyond the level of this piece will still enjoy playing it with others! The extended chords are fun to listen to, and the dynamic shading helps make this piece a wonderful addition to holiday recitals.
Key: C Major
Mood: Excited, yet subdued.
Pedagogy: ensemble playing, extended chords, dynamics.
