Description
This fun, contemporary solo by James L. King III gives intermediate students many opportunities to work on chromatic scales and fingerings, from the traditional 1-3-1-3-1-2-3 to tight clusters played quickly with all 5 fingers; a grand pause gives performers a chance to be over-the-top dramatic, and the final “sneeze” resolution is a double-forearm white-key cluster chord followed by a short chromatic passage in parallel minor thirds that gradually gets faster and moves to just one hand playing the chromatic scale. You already know the student who will excel with this piece!
Key: atonal
Mood: suspenseful, dramatic
Pedagogy: chromatic scales, grand pause
