Description

Written by Tin Pan Alley songwriters Bert Kalmar, Harry Ruby and Ted Snyder, this song was originally recorded by Isham Jones & his Orchestra in 1923.

In the song, the singer now has the upper hand following a breakup, and is rubbing it in.

Connie Francis didn’t want to record this song because she didn’t want to sing older pieces, but it was one of her father’s favorites and he convinced her to do it. Francis recorded her version in only one take.

It took off when Dick Clark started to play the single on the television show American Bandstand.

Francis had recently accepted a pre-med scholarship at New York University, but chose not to attend after the success of this piece.

James L. King III’s arrangement is more similar to the version sung on the movie A Night in Casablanca starring the Marx Brothers.

Key: C major

Mood: vindictive, spiteful, satisfied

Pedagogy: hand position changes, fingering, 1st/2nd endings, D.S.
