Description

This piece was arranged while at the 2018 Florida State Music Teachers Association conference in Coral Gables, FL.

Ríu Ríu Chíu is a 15th century Spanish villancico that has attained some contemporary fame as a Christmas carol.

The lyrics were written by Mateo Flecha the Elder, who died in 1553; the music has an anonymous composer. It is known from a single source, the Cancionero de Upsala, published in 1556 in Venice.

This solo arrangement preserves the contrapuntal writing, while staying mostly easier than intermediate (which makes this a great “emergency” recital piece).

Key: D Dorian

Mood: festive, engaging

Pedagogy: syncopation, hand position changes, time signature changes
