Everybody Loves My Baby
Everybody loves this 1924 hit, and this hit loves everybody who plays it!
Jack Palmer (1900–1976) was an African-American songwriter (mainly lyricist) who wrote with composer Spencer Williams, among others, during the 1920s. Spencer Williams (1889–1965) was an African-American jazz and popular music composer, pianist, and singer. Born in New Orleans, he was performing in Chicago by 1907, and moved to New York City about 1916, working as a songwriter and performer. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
This 1924 collaboration, Everybody Loves My Baby was first made into a hit by a band led by Spencer’s brother, Clarence Williams and his Blue Five (with Louis Armstrong on trumpet), and later by Ruth Etting. It enjoys continued popularity as a jazz standard. This arrangement, on the easy side of intermediate, mixes up some ragtime rhythms and shell voicings in the left hand for variety.
The original lyrics and biographical information is included in the Special Notes section.
