This early intermediate arrangement of the famous theme from Debussy’s Suite bergamasque is ideal for adult students, and is a great introduction to French Impressionism for everybody!

Description

The third and most famous movement of Claude Debussy’s Suite bergamasque is Clair de lune, in D♭ major. Its name comes from Verlaine’s poem Clair de lune, which is French for “moonlight.” James L. King III’s arrangement of the famous first theme of the piece moves the key down to C for ease in playing and reading. Students will gain experience with legatissimo touch and playing very softly throughout.  While this piece is marked as early intermediate, it really isn’t that far out of the reach of a motivated late elementary adult student: the slow tempo and familiarity appeal to many who are still working on their technique to play faster, but want to play something recognizable and mature.

Key: C major

Mood: calm, inspiring

Pedagogy: crossing hands, legatissimo touch, pianissimo

  1. John Bakos

I usually don’t teach simplified versions of classical pieces, but this intermediate arrangement of Clair de Lune is very well done and beautiful. It is a wonderful way to reinforce tied notes with one of the great melodies by Debussy.

  2. Katarina Stjerngren

Lovely arrangement, good for teenagers and adults asking for the classics.
